I brought my mother to this class and I was very glad that I did...after all, if I am encouraging parents to bond with their children over cooking, I should practise it too and after too many weeks of getting home after work at 11pm and hardly having time to catch up with my mother I decided to bring her down to one of our Saturday sessions for some much needed culinary mother-daughter action.
This recipe for family bonding comes from Jane Ho, under our Big Chef Little Chef programme.
Ingredients (serves four)
4 chicken franks
8 slices wholemeal or brown bread
4 slices picnic ham
Butter or margarine (optional)
1 punnet butter lettuce or coriander or grated cheese
2 kiwi fruits
1 box cherry tomatoes
1. Place sausages on foil lined pan and toast for 5 mins. Remove from heat and slit each sausage lengthwise to create a "smile". Return to oven and toast for 2 mins.
2. Butter one side of bread (if butter is desired). place ham and complete the sandwich by topping with another slice of bread (I like to include cheese in the sandwich with the ham before closing the sandwich).
3. Decorate the sandwich with cherry tomatoes on slices of kiwi for eyes, grated cheese or shredded lettuce for hair and a small pointed end of the tomato as a nose. I put a little lettuce moustache on mine for fun. Place the smiling sausage at the bottom where the mouth should be and there you have a happy smiling sausage sandwich!
